Autonomous AI Agents May Force Overhaul of India’s Data Rules

Speaking at the Global Fintech Fest, Cashfree cofounder Reeju Datta stated that the rise of autonomous AI payment agents could force regulators to rethink India’s data-localisation rules. Because personal AI agents might access payment credentials stored in overseas vaults to execute transactions on behalf of consumers, existing frameworks—designed before agentic commerce—must evolve to address cross-border data flows and liability while protecting sensitive financial data.
