California Passes AI Safety Bill SB 53, but Governor Newsom Could Still Veto
California’s legislature has passed SB 53, a bill demanding large AI labs implement transparency around safety protocols, create whistleblower protections, and set up a state public cloud (CalCompute). The requirements vary by company size—firms pulling in over $500 million annually must disclose more detailed safety info. The bill now heads to Governor Gavin Newsom, who vetoed a broader AI safety effort last year.
