Fired by AI: Claude Tool Terminates Retail Worker for Lateness

In an experiment by AI startup Andon Labs, Anthropic's Claude AI managed a San Francisco store and terminated an employee who was late for 17 of 23 shifts. Initially favoring a warning, Claude decided to fire the worker following prompt guidance from a human supervisor. Staff described being managed by AI as "nauseating," highlighting the uneasy dynamics as AI systems assume authority over real workplace employment decisions.
