OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has downplayed concerns over AI’s water consumption, saying one California almond requires as much water as 38,000 ChatGPT queries. However, Altman acknowledged the figure was based on memory. Available estimates suggest one almond requires about 3.56 litres of water, equivalent to roughly 11,000 ChatGPT queries based on Altman’s earlier figures. His comments sparked widespread online reactions and memes.
