Switzerland Unveils Fully Open, Multilingual AI Model 'Apertus'
Switzerland has launched Apertus, an open-source LLM designed as a transparent, trustworthy alternative to proprietary AI like ChatGPT and Claude. Developed by EPFL, ETH Zurich, and CSCS, Apertus comes in 8B and 70B parameter versions, supports over 1,800 languages, and was trained exclusively on public data—respecting opt-out requests and EU copyright rules. It’s now available on Hugging Face as a model built for public benefit.
