AI-Powered Billing Could Be Driving Nearly $1 Billion in Extra Healthcare Costs, Study Finds

A Blue Cross Blue Shield Association study found that AI tools may have contributed to $942 million in additional healthcare costs over two years by helping providers identify and bill for more secondary medical conditions. In 2024–25 alone, such billing added $653 million in costs. The insurers said some diagnoses increased without corresponding increases in treatments, raising questions about whether AI is identifying genuinely sicker patients or simply more billable conditions.
