Amazon Agrees to $2.5 Billion U.S. Settlement Over Misleading Prime Sign-Ups

Amazon has reached a $2.5 billion settlement with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over allegations that its Prime enrollment process used deceptive designs (“dark patterns”) to trick consumers into signing up and made cancelling membership difficult. The FTC said Amazon manipulated interfaces to push users toward unwanted subscriptions. As part of the agreement, Amazon will change its practices to make enrollments clearer and cancellations easier for customers.
