Data Center Boom Faces Growing Public Backlash Over Costs and Environmental Impact

More than 60% of Americans favor limiting new data centers, while $68 billion in projects were disrupted by local opposition in Q2 2026. A Data & Society study found concerns ranging from electricity bills, water use and emissions to property values and distrust of developers.
