Mega-Fine for App Safety: TikTok to Pay $400 Million Over Kids' Data Violations

TikTok and parent company ByteDance agreed to a historic $400 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice to resolve a 2024 lawsuit. The government accused the platform of violating the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by illegally collecting data from users under 13 without parental consent. TikTok will pay $300 million immediately, with $100 million due later following prior decree updates.
