OpenAI Poaches Google’s $2.7 Billion AI Guru Noam Shazeer

Google Gemini co-lead Noam Shazeer has left the company to join rival OpenAI. Shazeer, a co-author of the landmark 2017 Transformer paper, was rehired by Google in 2024 through a massive $2.7 billion deal with his startup, Character.AI.
