Hands-Free Checkout: NPCI Building Unified Agent Protocol for Autonomous UPI Payments

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is developing a Unified Agent Protocol (UAP) to enable AI assistants to independently initiate UPI transactions. Under pre-authorized, user-set spending limits, verified AI agents will execute routine purchases—such as daily groceries or flash sale orders—without requiring real-time human authentication for every payment, positioning India as a global leader in agentic digital infrastructure.
