Microsoft Switches Defaults to OpenAI, Handing Anthropic Another Setback

After instructing developers to phase out Claude Code, a Microsoft internal memo revealed OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 is now the official default AI model for internal engineering teams. Seeking to curb escalating AI token expenses and optimize spending across divisions, Microsoft modified its GitHub Copilot configuration to stop routing developer traffic to Anthropic by default, diverting a major source of enterprise AI traffic away from the startup.
