$125M Education Experiment Collapses: Board Votes to Close Priscilla Chan’s Free School

In 2016, Priscilla Chan co-founded The Primary School in California to support low-income children with healthcare and education. Despite receiving over $125 million from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), the tuition-free school struggled with underwhelming academic performance. The board unanimously voted to close it after CZI pulled funding to pivot toward scientific research, pledging $50 million to ease the shutdown.
