DHS Secretary Noem Fires Dozens of FEMA IT Staff Over Cybersecurity Breach

U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem dismissed 24 employees from FEMA’s IT department—including the CIO and CISO—following the discovery of a cybersecurity breach via a DHS audit. The investigation revealed sweeping failures, such as no multi-factor authentication, reliance on outdated protocols, and resistance to inspections. Although no data was stolen and no citizens affected, Noem described the IT leadership as blocking solutions.
