California Deal Empowers Uber & Lyft Drivers to Unionize While Reducing Costs

California Governor Gavin Newsom and lawmakers have reached a historic agreement with Uber and Lyft, enabling over 800,000 rideshare drivers—still classified as independent contractors—to form unions and engage in collective bargaining. The compromise includes two bills: one backed by SEIU California securing bargaining rights, and another by the companies reducing mandatory insurance costs. It’s the largest expansion of private-sector union rights in California history.
