Deepfake Political Scam Ads on Meta Hit $49M, Watchdog Warns
Scammers have spent approximately $49 million on Meta platforms using AI-generated deepfake videos of U.S. politicians—such as Donald Trump—to promote fake stimulus checks and benefits, particularly targeting seniors. A watchdog group found 63 scam advertisers behind more than 150,000 political ads, many of which remained active even after violations. Meta’s moderating mechanisms and content oversight are under scrutiny.
