Northwestern University researchers have created "SpiderCam," a highly energy-efficient 3D camera modeled after the jumping spider's vision system. Instead of using high-power hardware, it mimics multi-layered retinas by capturing split-focus images to calculate distance. Operating on just 624 milliwatts—well under one watt—the tech is slated to empower battery-sufficient drones, compact robots, and AR wearables.
