Hidden Numbers, Higher Risk: Govt Challenges WhatsApp Usernames

The Indian government has directed Meta to halt the rollout of WhatsApp's "username" feature, giving it three days to explain its safety protocols. While designed to improve privacy by hiding phone numbers, authorities fear the feature will trigger a surge in identity spoofing, phishing, and online fraud by allowing scammers to easily mimic official agencies and public figures.
