ICE Spends $825K on Surveillance Vans With Fake Cell Towers for Phone Spying

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) paid $825,000 for vehicles outfitted with cell-site simulators—fake cell towers that trick nearby phones into connecting, allowing location tracking and data interception. The contract with TechOps Specialty Vehicles follows a prior $818,000 deal. Though such technology is controversial for privacy and warrant concerns, ICE has long used it under non-disclosure agreements.
