India Mandates Deepfake Labeling with New IT Rules

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) proposed draft amendments to the IT Rules, 2021, to regulate deepfakes and AI-generated media. The new rules mandate that platforms must ensure all synthetic content carries a clear, non-removable label or metadata to help users distinguish it from authentic content. This move aims to enhance safety, accountability, and public trust against AI-driven misinformation and impersonation.
