Legacy Tech, Critical Shield: SCL Mohali Doubles Down on 180nm Chips

India’s Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali will retain its legacy 180nm chip node rather than upgrading to newer processes, as upgrading would require triple the Centre's ₹4,500 crore outlay. Director General Kamaljeet Singh stressed that 180nm chips remain strategically key for domestic defense, space, and automotive sectors, offering India essential full-stack indigenous fabrication without relying on imports.
