Mastodon Says It Lacks Tools to Comply with Age-Verification Laws

Decentralized social network Mastodon announced it can’t comply with Mississippi’s new age-verification law, citing its design to avoid user tracking. While Mastodon 4.4 adds a tool allowing individual servers to require a user’s date of birth at sign-up, the information isn’t stored—making network-wide enforcement impossible. CEO Eugen Rochko emphasized that real decentralization means no single authority can enforce such mandates across the fediverse.
