Microsoft to Sign EU AI Code of Practice as Meta Opts Out, Splitting Big Tech

The EU’s voluntary AI code of practice—part of the June 2024 AI Act—mandates signatories publish training-data summaries and enforce EU copyright compliance. Microsoft President Brad Smith told Reuters the company “will likely sign” to engage directly with the EU AI Office. Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer Joel Kaplan said Meta “won’t be signing,” citing legal uncertainties and overreach. OpenAI and Mistral have already signed the code.
