Morgan Stanley Forecasts 11× Surge in AI Data Center Water Use by 2028

A Morgan Stanley report projects that global water consumption by AI data centers—for cooling and electricity generation—could surge to 1,068 billion liters per year by 2028, an 11-fold increase from 2024 estimates. The broader water footprint, including semiconductor manufacturing, spans three scopes: on-site cooling, electricity generation, and chip production.
