Rare Earth Shortage Threatens India’s Electronic Component Manufacturing Ambitions

Critical rare earth mineral shortages—exacerbated by China’s export controls—are disrupting India’s Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), with over 10 companies warning they may miss incentive targets. Firms plan to import finished components instead of sourcing domestically or switching to non–rare-earth alternatives. The scarcity particularly affects magnets in audio, EV, and PCB sectors, risking production slowdowns and undermining India’s efforts to scale its electronics export.
