WhatsApp Bars General-Purpose Chatbots from Business API
WhatsApp, owned by Meta Platforms, announced changes to its Business API policy effective January 15, 2026, banning usage by general-purpose AI chatbots such as those from OpenAI, Perplexity AI and others. The move clarifies that only business-specific AI tools—not broad conversational agents—can operate on the platform, focusing on support, updates and utility rather than unrestricted AI assistance.
