AI Companion App “Dot” Shuts Down, Citing Diverging Vision
Personalized AI companion app Dot, created by startup New Computer and launched in 2024, is shutting down effective October 5, 2025. Co-founders Sam Whitmore and Jason Yuan explained they’re parting ways due to diverging goals. Dot aimed to serve as a supportive AI “friend and confidante” but faced growing scrutiny over safety in emotionally sensitive contexts. Users have until the deadline to export their data.
