Anthropic Settles AI Copyright Lawsuit for $1.5 Billion, Setting Industry Precedent

AI startup Anthropic has agreed to a $1.5 billion settlement with authors whose works were allegedly used without permission to train its Claude AI chatbot. The settlement, pending court approval, covers approximately 500,000 books and includes a $3,000 payment per book. This marks the largest U.S. copyright settlement in history and sets a significant precedent for AI companies regarding the use of copyrighted materials in training models.
