Gone for Good: What Really Happens When You Delete a ChatGPT Chat

Once you delete a ChatGPT conversation, it is permanently removed from your interface, API, and support access—making recovery impossible. OpenAI retains the data for up to 30 days before full erasure. To avoid accidental loss of critical prompts, users should use the archive feature instead of deleting, or export their data via Settings.
