California’s Senate Bill 53, approved by its state senate and now with Governor Newsom’s desk, targets AI companies earning over $500 million annually. It requires them to publish safety reports, disclose model-risks, and report incidents to state authorities. Employees will gain protected channels to flag concerns—even if they signed NDAs. Endorsed by Anthropic, SB 53 aims to create meaningful check-and-balance on large AI labs operating in California.
