US-based Viasat and the UAE's Space42 signed a binding agreement to commit up to $1 billion toward Equatys, a joint venture creating shared space and ground infrastructure. Designed as a neutral "space tower" model, the platform aims to deliver global direct-to-device (D2D) cellular connectivity, 5G services, and IoT coverage by extending standard smartphone access where terrestrial mobile networks cannot reach.
