ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming has instructed employees to refrain from using AI model distillation—training on outputs from advanced foreign models—to accelerate development. Acknowledging that this "build-from-scratch" approach may cause their Doubao models to temporarily lag behind domestic competitors, Zhang stressed sacrificing short-term gains to safeguard long-term independence and avoid IP controversies with US regulators.
