Australia Doubles Down on Big Tech: Fines Skyrocket to $68 Million to Enforce Teen Social Media Ban

Australia is introducing legislation to aggressively reinforce its world-first under-16 social media ban. After studies revealed that 85% of underage users easily bypassed restrictions using fake birthdays or photo checks, the government is doubling maximum non-compliance penalties to A$99 million ($68 million). Additionally, the eSafety Commissioner will receive sweeping new powers to compel tech companies to hand over internal emails and compliance documents.
