AI Chip Demand Drives Surge in Power Consumption, Raising Environmental Concerns

The global demand for AI chips has led to a significant increase in electricity usage, with AI chip manufacturing consuming nearly 984 gigawatt-hours in 2024—a 350% rise from the previous year, according to Greenpeace. This surge has resulted in over 453,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. Projections indicate that by 2030, electricity demand for AI chip production could exceed Ireland's current total consumption.
