Australia’s Under-16 Social Media Ban Earns UN Praise

Australia’s government will start enforcing a law from December that bans social media use for users under 16, raising the minimum age from 13. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized growing harms from bullying, mental health issues, misinformation, and body image risks among young teens. The law, welcomed at the UN General Assembly and by the EU, requires platforms to employ AI and behavioural data for age estimation.
