FTC Starts Inquiry into How Google, Meta, OpenAI Monitor Child Safety in Chatbots

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has issued orders to Google, Meta, OpenAI, Snap, xAI, Character.AI, and others, seeking details on how they measure, test, and monitor the effects of their chatbots on children and teens. The inquiry also asks what steps firms have taken to limit minors’ exposure. The investigation is being conducted under the FTC’s “6(b)” market study authority and could feed into future regulatory or enforcement actions.
