MIT Unveils Self-Assembling Battery Electrolyte That Dissolves for Easy Recycling

MIT researchers have engineered a novel self-assembling electrolyte made of Kevlar-like aramid amphiphiles (AAs) that form ion-conducting nanoribbons. This material supports lithium-ion flow in solid-state batteries yet rapidly dissolves in organic solvents—causing the battery to disassemble cleanly. This “recycle-first” approach enables easy recovery of components without harsh chemicals or high heat, potentially transforming EV battery recycling and reducing demand for raw lithium mining.
