UCL’s Ultrasound Helmet Revolutionizes Deep Brain Stimulation

Researchers from UCL and the University of Oxford have unveiled an innovative ultrasound “helmet” capable of precisely stimulating deep brain regions—1,000-times smaller than conventional tools—completely non-invasively. Using 256 focused ultrasound elements and fMRI-guided targeting of the thalamic lateral geniculate nucleus, the system modulated neural activity in human volunteers, with effects lasting over 40 minutes.
