US House Bans WhatsApp on Government Devices Citing Security Risks

The U.S. House of Representatives has banned WhatsApp on all government-issued devices, citing a memo from the Office of Cybersecurity that highlights transparency issues, lack of data encryption at rest, and other vulnerabilities. Staffers have been instructed to switch to approved messaging apps across Microsoft Teams, Wickr, Signal, iMessage, and FaceTime. Meta strongly opposes the ban, asserting its end-to-end encryption is more secure than alternatives.
