A Nature study reveals that smoke from Canada’s 2023 wildfires slashed solar generation by 6.38 terawatt-hours across North America and Europe over five months. Smoke particles blocked sunlight, reducing output by ~2.8%, triggering a $1.9 billion economic loss and adding 2.1 megatons of CO2 emissions.
