OpenAI initially sought to acquire Anysphere, the creator of the AI coding assistant Cursor, attracted by its rapid growth and approximately $300 million in annual recurring revenue. However, Anysphere declined the offer, aiming to remain independent and reportedly seeking a $10 billion valuation. Subsequently, OpenAI turned its attention to Windsurf, a smaller yet fast-growing AI coding startup with around $100 million in ARR.
