India Introduces Fees on Large UPI Merchant Transactions

India will introduce a 0.4% merchant fee on certain UPI payments above ₹2,000 from October 15, 2026, ending the network’s long-standing zero-fee model for larger merchant transactions. Consumers will continue using UPI for free, while small merchants and most transactions remain exempt. The move is intended to support UPI’s infrastructure, cybersecurity, fraud prevention, and long-term sustainability.
