AI Hallucination Risk: Chatbots Invent Research and Citations

Generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot frequently "hallucinate" and fabricate research papers, journal articles, and archival records that do not exist, according to the Red Cross. Because these Large Language Models are designed to generate a plausible answer based on statistical patterns, they invent sources when they cannot find real ones.
