Taming the Screen: TRAI Proposes Government Licensing for Smart TV Apps

India's telecom regulator (TRAI) has proposed a new framework requiring live-streaming and FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV) apps on smart TVs to obtain government authorization under the Telecommunications Act, 2023. Smart TV manufacturers will be required to host only government-approved apps, establishing a centralized registry to enforce broadcast codes, mandate consumer grievance systems, and integrate digital viewing into national audience measurement ratings.
