China Defies Predictions with Early Launch of Homegrown Chipmakers
Defying analyst forecasts that placed commercial-scale progress in the mid-2030s, China has begun mass-producing domestic immersion deep ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machines. A Shanghai-backed firm is shipping its first units this year to major foundries SMIC, Hua Hong, and CXMT. While initial production remains low (~5 units in 2026) and trails market leader ASML in performance, the breakthrough accelerates China’s goal of bypassing Western export sanctions.
