Instagram to Discontinue End-to-End Encryption for Direct Messages

Meta has announced that it will end support for end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) chats on Instagram, effective May 8, 2026. The company stated that low user adoption drove the decision to remove the feature. Users with affected conversations are advised to download and back up their media and messages before the deadline. Moving forward, Meta will regain technical access to message content for safety, moderation, and compliance purposes.
